This year, NUS will be hosting a special commission on The Future of Student Financial Support. NUS have opened a survey, where they will be asking a number of questions about student finance, in order to shape the proposal of an alternative set of support systems. To thank you for your time NUS will enter you into a draw to win a cash prize of £500 or one of ten £50 cash prizes.

In recent times, much emphasis has rightly been placed on debating the way that universities are funded, with the policy direction changing substantially as a result of the Browne Review and the election of the current coalition government.

But this has meant that not enough attention has been paid to issues of student financial support – the pound in students’ pockets.

NUS want to investigate the costs faced by students today, and the impact of the complex range of support measures available to them, finding out if the right people are getting the right help, in the right way.

They will look at international comparisons, putting to the test the often-made point about England’s support system being the most generous in the world.

They want to involve students and students’ unions in carrying out research into under-examined corners of the financial landscape for students so they can get a real sense of how financial pressures impact on students in all their diversity.

Survey Launch

NUS have launched a major membership-wide research project, looking at the experiences of students in schools, colleges and universities in England, from undergraduate up to postgraduate research. They want to know what the experience is of support, how it effects participation, performance and well-being.

NUS will present an alternative to the current piecemeal set of support systems, and they need your help to do it, to let them know what matters and help them to shape the future of student support.

NUS have released a survey which will ask you questions about how you fund your living costs whilst studying and what you think of the support you receive. So, if you are studying for your degree, masters, PHD, If you are an apprentice, or on any course at a college or other learning provider in England, then we want to hear from you about what you think works well – and what might need changing – about how you are supported.

To thank you for your time NUS will enter you into a draw to win a cash prize of £500 or one of ten £50 cash prizes.

The survey should take around 20 minutes to complete and can be completed confidentially.

Take part in the survey today!

As Christmas approaches, Police forces all over the country are urging people to log their expensive gifts and precious belongings on Immobilise.com, the world’s largest FREE register of ownership details, and together with its sister sites the Police’s NMPR (www.thenmpr.com ) and CheckMEND forms a very effective tool in helping to reduce crime and repatriate recovered personal property to its rightful owners.

Any item can be registered on Immobilise from small pieces of jewellery to plasma screen TVs and it is especially popular with people wishing to register mobile phones, and bicycles. The system records serial numbers and also allows the user to upload a photo and description.

The database is linked directly to police systems, enabling officers to trace the owners of recovered property and to also identify the item as being stolen if found in the possession of a suspected thief. This ability to link suspects to a crime via the database means that Immobilise acts as a major deterrent to criminals.

Create a FREE private and secure portfolio of all your personal property.

If your phone, bike, computer or any other registered item is lost or stolen, use Immobilise to instantly tell police, insurers, and the second-hand trade. These actions help greatly in the recovery of your property and capture of thieves.

Benefits of registration:

Immobilise helps police identify the owner of lost and stolen property thousands of times each day.

Loss and theft updates you make are immediately available to the Police nationally.

Combat the sale of stolen gadgets and valuables; alert the second-hand trade & publicly checkable stolen goods database CheckMEND if an item goes missing.

Simplify insurance claims and Police reports with certificates of ownership.

Great member offers from Immobilise’s numerous supporters, often helping support provision of Immobilise.

These features are unique to the FREE Immobilise service.

As a direct result of Immobilise there are over 250 cases a week where property is returned or information collected that assists the Police in investigating criminal activity involving stolen goods.

Immobilise is also the only ownership registration service supported by all UK Police forces, the Greater London Authority, and the Mobile Phone Industry.

How is Immobilise so popular? I’d not heard of it until now!

Although Immobilise has been operation for over 8 years, the free nature of the service means advertising budgets are all but nonexistent.

However the ongoing support of Police and councils who hold marking/registration events, plus the efforts of retailers which offer free registration as a benefit at the point of sale, have helped make immobilise the largest service of its kind in the world.
