What is the Students’ Union?

Student Unions

Under the 1994 Education Act, all universities and colleges in England and Wales (and post-1992 universities and designated institutions in Scotland) are obliged to provide a student union and are responsible for its financial probity.  Student unions are operated autonomously , but the governing body must approve the union’s constitution at least every five years, and must have in place a formal agreement about how the union and the governing body will interact.  The institution provides funding to the union and should receive its report and

The University of Bolton Students’ Union (UBSU) is the representative body for students at Bolton. UBSU exists to represent you, provide services for you (social, commercial and welfare) without discrimination on grounds of sex, race, sexuality, age, religion or creed. When you enrol as a student at the University of Bolton you automatically become a member of the Students’ Union. This entitles you to use any of our services and facilities. The Union exists for your benefit and we work purely in the interest of all students. Don’t worry if you don’t want to be a member, you have the right to opt-out, and you can still use our services and facilities.

The Students’ Union is run by students for students and is a democratically elected and inclusive organisation. The Senate is made up of Sabbatical and Non-Sabbatical Officers. The Senate is responsible for the day to day running of the Students’ Union, also on hand are the Students’ Union staff who are able to offer you help and advice whatever the problem.

The best way to learn about the Students’ Union is to visit us. We are located in the Chancellor’s Mall. Come and meet the Officers, have a coffee in The Loft, see what clubs and societies we have on offer or just have a look around. Our door is always open. Remember there is no such thing as strangers – only friends you haven’t yet met.

Mission Statement

The Student’s Union’s Strategic Plan reveals that;

‘To deliver services and results to which we aspire, it is important that we have the mechanisms and tools to evaluate our impact on adding value to the University, impact positively on the student experience  and where measurable how we aid student retention at the  University of Bolton’

Similarly, the Financial Memorandum between the Union and University recognises that;

‘The University welcomes the role performed by the Students’ Union which it sees as a benefit to the Student Body. The Board recognises that it is the natural and logical choice of students to be members of the Union and therefore provides funds for the purpose of the Union’s management and operation’

So, where does the Union begin to assess what it does? The University of Bolton Students’ Union has over arching strategies and strives to:-

  1. Be dedicated to representing students to all bodies and ensuring the views and beliefs of our members are heard
  2. Provide a wide range of sporting clubs, societies and social opportunities to its members in order to create a strong, vocal and innovative “Student Community”
  3. Ensure that the relationship between its members and the local community is strong, vibrant and diverse
  4. Be an agent in the development of students future employability skills by providing employment and volunteering opportunities
  5. Provide a wide range of commercial services to its members in order to enhance the overall on campus experience by being innovative, value for money and convenient
  6. Ensure the lasting stability of UBSU through a cautious yet purposeful approach in terms of both finances and management of the organisation
  7. Supply students with access to relevant sources of advice and support; with a sabbatical officer dedicated to education and representation, and an advice unit capable of delivering advice on any issue that becomes integral to students.

Subsequently, each of these strategies are considered to explore whether the Union does deliver what it says it does with added value, impacting upon student retention and positively impacting on the Student experience at the University of Bolton.

The Team at UBSU hopes you enjoy your time in Bolton, and we wish you the best of luck with your studies and look forward to meeting you during the year.
