Internal Subject Review Panels

NEW for 2009/10 students as full panel members of Internal Subject Reviews

This year the University and the Students' Union are working together to engage students as full panel members of the Universities Internal Subject Reviews.  During the academic year 08/09 we gave students the opportunity to observe a review to help them decide whether it's for them (of course we will give prospective Student Panel Members this opportunity every year).  During the academic year 09/10 we will be recruiting and training students as full panel members.  As renumeration for their role, students will be paid the rate of £80.00 per day for up to 5 days work.

So what is an Internal Subject Review?

Internal Subject Review is the process adopted by the University to formally review its major subject provision on a 5-6 yearly cycle. The primary purpose of Internal Subject Review is to assure the University that there is effective management of the quality and standards of its subject provision and that there is evidence of a commitment to continuous development and enhancement. Internal Subject Review also helps the University to test the effectiveness of its annual monitoring processes.

Students and the Internal Subject Review

Students will be a key part of the Internal Subject Review process from 2009-10, when one member of the Review Panel will be a current student of the University. Also, during the review, the Review Panel meets with groups of students to find out what they think about their learning experience. During 2008-09 we are providing the opportunity for students who might be interested in being a Student Panel Member the following year to act as an observer in an Internal Subject Review.

Student Panel Members

Student Panel Members will have an important role in providing a student perspective to the Review, particularly when it comes to commenting upon the student experience. Student Panel Members are appointed by the University with the help of the Students' Union.

Student Panel Members will:
1.  Be an enrolled student of the University. The University is keen to identify students representing a broad spectrum of the student population and as such welcomes interest from students who study full-time, part-time, and by distance learning;

2.  Preferably have experience of representing students' interests at University, School or Programme) level;

3.  Be able to demonstrate that they have the potential to undertake the required review   activities and are able to commit the necessary time.

The Student Panel Member will be expected to:
1.  Take advantage of any training and support opportunities offered, prior to the review itself.

2.  Participate as a full member of the Internal Subject Review Panel before, during and after the Internal Subject Review. This will include reading the Review documentation and participating in the Review itself, which will involve various meetings with both staff and students of the University;

3.  Provide comments on and/or indicate their approval of the Internal Subject Review Report within 2/3 weeks following receipt of the Report;

4.  Complete an evaluation questionnaire and return it to the Quality Assurance and Enhancement Unit.

Supporting Student Members

Being a Student Panel Member should be a rewarding experience as you will be contributing to the development of the student experience. To support you in this role the University will provide access to training which is delivered jointly by the University and the Students' Union.

Specifically the University will:
1.  Provide an opportunity for training of student members. This will be delivered jointly by the University and the Students' Union and will offer a one day training session for student members of internal subject review panels;

2.  Organise a briefing meeting for the student panel member, providing information on the role and an opportunity for the student member to meet with key staff (including the Panel Chair and the other internal members);

3.  Provide information and resources on-line using a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) **.  (** to be developed).

When will the Internal Subject Reviews Take Place?

The reviews will take place during semester 2.  We will be advertising training sessions soon so watch this space!
