Hi my name is Shana Begum and I am your Student Union President.
As your new Students’ Union President, it’s a huge honour and pleasure for me to say ‘welcome to the University of Bolton’ to all the new students and the fantastic current students. I have taken time out to fulfill this role, and yet to complete my Business Management degree here in Bolton.
I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you about my ambitions for your Students’ Union and I hope you’ll welcome the ideas I’ve had to help build an inclusive, career-focused service that supports others less fortunate than us.
The University of Bolton has students around the world and from a wide range of backgrounds. So we’ve created new societies, such as the Disabled Students’ Society and Mature Students’ Society, to reflect the diverse student population of our University.
Regardless of our backgrounds, however, we all have something in common – ambition to graduate and enjoy career success. This year we are launching new initiatives to support students in their professional development and we are working with local employers to create career opportunities in Bolton, so when students graduate their skills and knowledge can stay local and continue to contribute to the community of which we are a part.
Of course there are communities around the world so much less fortunate than ours and we want to help. This year we are setting up a Raising And Giving Society (community and charity soc) to support worthy causes. Every two months we’ll focus on a new charity but first to benefit from our fund-raising work will be the people of Somalia. As I am sure you have read in the news, people there are trying to survive some of the worst famine and drought conditions in their country’s history. We want to help and we will be updating you with our fundraising ideas very soon. Please regularly check our website, which will also be given a makeover this year.
This is just an introduction to what I plan for us to achieve together during my year as your President. I hope you’ll be keen to get involved and tell me what you’d like from your Students’ Union. We want to focus on listening to students so if you have any ideas on what you want from us please contact me, my email address is supres@bolton.ac.uk
Wherever you are around the world we are all thrilled that you are a part of us and we wish you every success with your studies this year.
Yours
truly
Shana
Below is my manifesto
I have been studying Business Management for over 2 years;
‘My mission is to either find a way to better the student experience or make a way’
The University of Bolton accommodates a diverse range of students from all over the world, from college leavers to mature and part-time working students.
The Students’ Union needs a diverse open-minded, creative leader. I feel I am best suited for this position. I have an interest in culture, I am young yet have a lot of life experience, extensive work experience and experience in raising a family.
I have already been asking students what they need. There is a unique range of students with different needs at Bolton University, talents that can be contributed to this University, and together I believe we can join our ideas and form new clubs and interesting societies, which can be enjoyed by all of us.
I want to make sure that the Students’ Union budget is spent on the people that count the most. You the Students of Bolton University.
With me you have a Students’ Union Sabbatical Officer Who:
• Is a Pro-active leader, honest and reliable Is a fearless, consultative communicator and a team player
• has extensive knowledge and experience with project management and problem solving
• will always consider your needs first with all decision making
• will work to transform the University Campus into a friendly, inviting, comforting and cohesive environment where people feel they belong, can be proud of and have a great time.
• will guarantee that the Loft bar becomes an exciting place where students can meet, have fun and enjoy its superb food and drink at affordable prices
• will work to create far more clubs and societies that you want to be involved in
• Has vision and is able to bring positive change that benefits the students of our university.
• Is not afraid to stand up and make a change
I believe that a better student experience can only exist with good communication. Good communication is more than just computers scattered about the University. Good communication means common understanding, a common tradition, common ideas, common ideals and team work.
